Oprah Winfrey once said “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams”. Easier said than done or is it just that easy? You may not be able to wake up tomorrow living the exact life that you picture but you can take small steps right now to start living the life once imagined.
Want more travel adventures in between your big trips? Consider your own country. When we think about travel adventures, we often look to another state or country. How about starting where you live! Get yourself a guidebook for your city or state and flip through it. The best thing about guidebooks is that they provide little nuggets of information about where you live that you may never have considered. You’ll be surprised how many weekends you can plan within your own city or state just by consulting a guidebook. To make it feel like a true trip away from home, check into a hostel or rented housing (you may find that your city has unique housing, i.e. sleeping overnight in a converted jail, a castle, sleep pods, etc.) and explore your city from there. Not a fan of guidebooks? Get on the internet. Groupon, Travelzoo, and Living Social are some of my favorite sites for finding last minute deals on activities when I haven’t made plans for a weekend but want to get out and explore. In fact, I like changing the location on Groupon and Travelzoo to places I’m thinking of going to see what deals I can find on them. My favorite ways of choosing my next destinations these days are to find cities or places I’m interested in on Instagram by searching for that hashtag of the place, looking on Pinterest, or checking the arrival and departure cities on the airport monitors and writing down as many that I know and don’t know as I can! This is how I was able to combine a trip to Bruges, Belgium with my weekend break in Brussels. I always write down where I want to go and what I want to do but keep misplacing things. So for my trip this December, I am creating a Pinterest board so that I collect interests and then choose. Create a Pinterest board for what you would like to do and then start making your way through them. When traveling abroad, try finding your interests versus just going to sites just because the city is famous for them. I am a huge fan of music especially Reggae, Country, and Soca music. Whenever I travel, I look for concerts or others music events where I’m likely to run into other people who share my interests. Thus far, I’ve planned vacations dates around Kanye & Jay Z’s concert in Paris, Beyonce and Jay Z in Paris, Reggae party in Amsterdam, Reggae concerts in Finland, and week long parties in Jamaica. On the other hand, if you are a runner, plan your vacation around a 10K, half marathon, marathon, etc in your destination city.
Maybe it’s the Scorpio in me but I think one of the big ways to get over a hump is to get in touch with your sexuality and explore it. I’m not telling you to go get arrested though! Keep it safe. Maybe for you this means taking some pole dancing or dance classes to boost your confidence. Maybe for others that also includes testing those skills out on the person in your life either at home or after your class by paying the teacher to let you do a presentation to your significant other after a couple of classes. Ever thought you were Queen Cleopatra in a past life? Bring that chick to life. Whatever that kink is that you have been dying to try, share with your partner and go for it. If you are too embarrassed about it, that’s what we have phones and emails for. Or agree to trade fantasy for fantasy for however long you choose: get a bowl with a lid, drop each of your fantasies in there, and randomly start picking out fantasies as often as you both wish, and going from there. If you don’t like what the other person chose, no is always a valid response. Remember fantasies are not always sexual – maybe you want to turn your living room into a tropical paradise. Consider sexual and non-sexual fantasies in this quest to make your relationship more interesting. There are only so many dinners or movie dates that one can do before boredom sets in. What do you have to lose?
Talk down your fear and take that first step. Other steps become easier along the way. Tried and tested methods of helping to get you on a path of adventure are to remember to 1) start doing and stop dreaming, 2) embrace and learn from your mistakes.
